What to Check Before Calculating

1

Verify your prescribed dose (mg) from your healthcare provider

2

Confirm the vial concentration (mg/mL) on your pharmacy label

3

Check your syringe type (U-100, U-50, or U-30)

4

Ensure the vial has not expired

How mg to Units Conversion Works

Converting mg to syringe units requires two pieces of information: the prescribed dose in mg and the vial concentration in mg/mL. The formula is straightforward:

Volume (mL) = Prescribed dose (mg) ÷ Concentration (mg/mL)

Units = Volume (mL) × Units per mL of syringe

Example 1: Semaglutide

Prescribed dose: 0.5 mg | Concentration: 5 mg/mL | Syringe: U-100

0.5 ÷ 5 = 0.1 mL × 100 = 10 units

Example 2: Tirzepatide

Prescribed dose: 2.5 mg | Concentration: 10 mg/mL | Syringe: U-100

2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 mL × 100 = 25 units

Example 3: Higher Concentration

Prescribed dose: 1 mg | Concentration: 2 mg/mL | Syringe: U-100

1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 mL × 100 = 50 units

Formula: Volume (mL) = Dose (mg) ÷ Concentration (mg/mL); Units = Volume × Units/mL of syringe type.

U-100: 100 units/mL (most common insulin syringe)

U-50: 50 units/mL

U-30: 30 units/mL (low-dose syringe)

This calculation is a standard pharmaceutical conversion. The calculator does not recommend dosages or suggest dose changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about GLP-1 dose conversion.

Divide the prescribed dose (mg) by the vial concentration (mg/mL) to get the volume in mL. Then multiply by the syringe units per mL (100 for U-100, 50 for U-50, 30 for U-30) to get the number of units to draw. For example, 0.5 mg from a 2 mg/mL vial on a U-100 syringe: 0.5 ÷ 2 = 0.25 mL × 100 = 25 units.

You need: (1) your prescribed dose in mg, (2) the vial concentration in mg/mL (found on the pharmacy label), (3) the syringe type you are using, and optionally (4) the total vial volume in mL for refill estimates.

No. The mg dose depends on the vial concentration. 10 units from a 2 mg/mL vial delivers a different mg dose than 10 units from a 5 mg/mL vial. Always verify the concentration on your pharmacy label before drawing.

Yes. This calculator works for any injectable GLP-1 medication where you know the prescribed dose (mg) and vial concentration (mg/mL). Select tirzepatide from the medication dropdown to see common concentration presets.

Enter your exact concentration in the concentration field. The preset buttons are for common scenarios, but you can type any concentration. Always use the value printed on your pharmacy label.

Yes. This tool is for educational purposes and general understanding of the mg-to-units conversion process. It is not a medical device, does not replace professional guidance, and should not be used to determine or adjust dosage. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber and pharmacy.
